Typically the software evaluation mechanisms applied by natural language
processing (NLP) researchers do not incorporate the testing
methodologies developed within the software testing community. This talk
will discuss the application of formal software testing methods to NLP
systems, focusing on verification of lexicalized tree adjoining grammars
(LTAGs). LTAGs are widely used in language understanding and language
generation systems. The ultimate goal of this research project is to
enable NLP researchers to produce more reliable systems with a range of
user interface mechanisms. The work presented is being carried out
jointly with Ellen Siefring.
